Attention UTD students & staff

From July 15th through October 15th, the Dallas Community Centers (VITA) will operate a year-round tax office open to complete prior year (2013-2016) returns, amended returns, NR returns, and ITIN applications.


Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation services to those currently affiliated with UTD. IRS-certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. This free service program is offered to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, elderly, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance preparing their own tax returns.

What to Bring

The following items are needed in order for our volunteers to prepare your tax return. Please take a moment to browse through the list and make sure that you gather all the necessary paperwork before you come. This is a general list; so if you have any other paperwork that you think is pertinent, please bring them with you to the VITA center.

Required items:

Please download and complete either a NRA Client Intake FormPortable Document Format (PDF) or a US/Resident Client Intake FormPortable Document Format (PDF). You must bring a completed Client Intake Form. This form is essential to the preparation of your tax return and you must bring it to your appointment.
  • Completed NRA Client Intake FormPortable Document Format (PDF) or a US/Resident Client Intake FormPortable Document Format (PDF).
  • Must bring valid photo identification (i.e. Passport, Driver’s License, State Id or Military Id)
  • Social Security card
  • UTD ID card
  • Proof of Tax Residence status for you, your spouse, and all dependents, if applicable
  • Birth dates for primary, secondary, and dependents on the tax return
  • Form 1042-S Foreign Person's U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding
  • Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from your banks (Form 1099)
  • Mortgage Interest Statement (Form 1098)
  • Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage (Form 1095-C)
  • Bank routing number and account number for Direct Deposit (your bank checkbook)

Nice to have items:

  • A copy of last year's Federal and State tax returns, if available
  • Current year's tax package, if received
  • Records to substantiate any other item that you wish to include on your tax return
