Centraltrak: The UT Dallas Artists Residency opens its season 6 p.m., Sat., Sept. 12 with three solo exhibitions. Shown in separate spaces, works by Peter Barrickman, Mary Benedicto and Keri Oldham unite in a symphony of brash color and original form. Barrickman, Benedicto and Oldham use color linguistically: hues function as invitations to interact.
New work by former Centraltrak artist in residence and Milwaukee artist Peter Barrickmann will be in the main gallery. Barrickman’s paintings are rhythmically alive with primary and secondary colors and a fusion of Philip Guston-esque form. Barrickman interprets the life-world of Middle America in a motley maelstrom of painterly objects. “Here the discarded colors of our world mix with the views from a tired future, a fantastical past, and a present aching in a kaleidoscope of association,” says Barrickman.
Dallas new media artist and sculptor Mary Benedicto’s installation in the storefront project space, St. Angela of the Toucans, strikes irony by way of a neon explosion of color and form. It is a shrine to the Dollar Store, consumer indulgence, and the related promise of a consumer paradise.
The work of New York artist Keri Oldham combines fashion, sculpture and watercolor to explore how perception is hinged on our experience of a self and malleable identity. The experience of physical ailments, embarrassment, sexuality, and fashion posturing are gateways for thinking about the self in different terms. Oldham’s watercolor characters are translucent and emotive- modeling their anxieties and fantasy world like an inner diagram.
Opening reception 6-8 p.m., Sept. 12. Gallery hours are Wed. – Sat., noon to 5 p.m. Centraltrak is located at 800 Exposition Ave., Dallas, 75226. For more information, visit centraltrak.org.
