Stacking the Deck: How Conflict of Interest—And Other Factors—Skews Identification of Treatment Benefit over Harm

Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD is professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego with a joint appointment in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. She serves as staff physician at the VA San Diego Medical Center as a primary care provider for about 280 patients. She has a BS in physics, an MD and a PhD from UC San Diego. Dr. Golomb’s research on the biochemical and cellular bases of health, aging, and disease has included the adverse effects of statin drugs in treating cholesterol, the health benefits and harms of foods and nutrients such as chocolate, trans fats, and coenzyme Q10, autism, and Gulf War syndrome. Many of her studies have been featured in national and international print, radio and television media, from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Canadas’ Globe and Mail, to Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show.

Golomb will argue that the current modes of medical reasoning and clinical trial design make it much more likely that the benefits of drugs will be identified and publicized, while we are much less likely to detect the ways in which they are harmful.
