UTD Students & Guest Artists
Students from UT Dallas’ Advanced Orchestra and Chamber Music ensemble perform with faculty members and guest artists under the direction of composer-conductor Dr. Robert Xavier Rodríguez.
UT Dallas' Musica Nova ensemble performs music written for large and small ensembles, plus multi-media and theater works of all periods. Instrumentalists, singers, composers, actors, dancers and video artists from UT Dallas’ Advanced Orchestra/Chamber Music Ensemble class join faculty and other professional musicians. Musica Nova guest artists have included members of the Dallas Symphony and Dallas Opera Orchestra and singers from the New York City Opera and Metropolitan Opera. Music from past Musica Nova concerts has ranged from Medieval and Renaissance dances and motets to standard repertoire to experimental mixed-media works written for and/or developed by the ensemble. Concerts have included an evening of jigs, an evening of tangos, an evening of improvisation, French cabaret and mariachi songs, chamber opera, video art, ballet and a fully-staged commedia dell'arte pantomime. Robert Xavier Rodríguez is "one of the major American composers of his generation" (Texas Monthly). His music has been described as "romantically dramatic" (Washington Post), "richly lyrical" (Musical America) and "glowing with a physical animation and delicate balance of moods that combine seductively with his all-encompassing sense of humor" (Los Angeles Times).
Rodriguez's works have been performed by conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Antal Dorati, Eduardo Mata, James DePriest, Sir Raymond Leppard, Keith Lockhart, Andrew Litton and Leonard Slatkin and by such organizations as the New York City Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dallas Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Vienna Schauspielhaus, Israel Philharmonic, Mexico City Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and the Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Knoxville, Baltimore, St. Louis, National, Boston and Chicago Symphonies.
He has studied with Jacob Druckman, Elliot Carter and Nadia Boulanger, and he has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Goddard Lieberson Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Prix Lili Boulangerand the Prix de Composition Prince Pierre de Monaco. Rodríguez has served as Composer-in-Residence with the San Antonio Symphony and the Dallas Symphony. Seventeen CDs featuring his music have been recorded (1999 Grammy nomination), and his music is published exclusively by G. Schirmer. He is a University Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he holds an Endowed Chair of Art and Aesthetic Studies and is Director of the Musica Nova ensemble.
Michael McVay holds degrees from the University of Missouri/Kansas City Conservatory (piano), the Royal College of Music in London (piano) and the University of North Texas (music theory/piano). He performs regularly in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in a variety of styles and venues, and his CD Michael McVay and Friends can be heard on Dallas radio station KAAM. Previous academic positions include Lecturer at LaSalle/SIA College of the Arts in Singapore, Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Austin College, visiting faculty member in music theory at the University of North Texas and Staff Accompanist at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. McVay is currently Clinical Assistant Professor at UT Dallas, where he also teaches music theory and serves as pianist and Assistant Director of the Musica Nova ensemble.
Mary Medrick is known as an extraordinarily versatile musician, trained in classical music, while frequently performing in the areas of opera, musical theater and early music. She is an ASCAP Special Award recipient and a member of the American Federation of Musicians. She has performed in 17 countries and was pianist for the premiere of Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess in Israel. As a writer, Medrick has produced three opera libretti and the scores for three Broadway style shows. Her original works have been performed in New York, Texas, Michigan, Colorado, California, Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, and Mexico.
In the Dallas area, Medrick is active as a musical director and conductor. Recent productions include The Threepenny Opera (UNT), Les Miserables (Garland Civic Theater), A Christmas Carol and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (Dallas Theater Center). As keyboardist, Medrick has performed with the Dallas Opera Orchestra, the Dallas Summer Musicals (numerous shows), Watertower Theater (Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods), the Charleston Symphony, East Texas Symphony, Richardson Symphony, San Antonio Symphony and Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (Guadalajara, MX). Medrick is also called upon to produce computer-generated tracks and to provide MIDI orchestrations for a variety of productions.
As an undergraduate at University of South Florida, her first love was music theory, which she also pursued in graduate coursework at U. of North Texas. Medrick's teachers include Dr. Armin Watkins, Dr. Jerry Wallace and Steve Nielsen (piano), Annetta Monroe and Dr. Mary Ella Collins (voice), and Dr. Stephen Park, Dr. Ann Hawkins and Dr. Gene Cho (theory). She holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Arts from UT Dallas.
At UT Dallas, Medrick teaches piano, music theory/composition and has music directed, composed music for and stage directed theater productions. With her broad background in the humanities, she has taught Musical Theater Workshop Exploration of the Arts and Elements of Art and Performance.
