Friday, Apr 22, 2016
9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Location: JSOM 1.118

The Center for Children and Families' 8th Annual Spring Lecture Series on "Empowering Children and Parents Together." The lecture series continues the theme of the previous fall forum with a series of talks by Center-affiliated researchers. All lectures are held in the Jindal School of Management (Davidson Auditorium) and are free and open to the public.

On April 22nd, hear from Dr. George Holden on "Is There a Better Way to Discipline? Protecting Children and Promoting Positive Behavior."

There is strong evidence that corporal punishment is both ineffective and associated with unintended problems. In addition, an awareness of research findings can change parents’ attitudes about corporal punishment. This presentation will review research on the effects of physical punishment and parents’ attitudes towards its use, and will explore an alternative child-rearing approach labeled “positive discipline.”
