Children's Group Therapy Programs

Our certified, licensed speech-language pathologists provide specialized individual and group therapy services for children of all ages with speech, language and feeding disorders. Family involvement is an integral part of our treatment and parents/caregivers are a critical member of our team.

We want to partner with you to provide expert diagnostic services and to develop a positive therapeutic plan to optimize your child’s progress.                                                  

Articulation and Motor Speech

Programs for children who have difficulty producing/articulating age appropriate sounds:

Motor Concepts for Articulation (MoCA)

Motor Concepts for Articulation (MoCA) is a small group articulation therapy program for preschool and young school-aged children. MoCA is designed to teach children complex ideas about movement and their articulators (parts of their mouths) in fun and simple ways. The teaching philosophy relies on helping the child understand more about the production of target sounds, shaping and encouraging use of new motor patterns, and strengthening the underlying musculature as needed. MoCA is an intense articulation therapy program conducted by a licensed speech language pathologist with the support of graduate interns.

Speech Stars I 
A comprehensive therapy program for preschool children combining individual and group therapy to facilitate correct production of speech sounds.  It is designed to help increase speech intelligibility for children who are very difficult to understand and may have difficulty producing many different sounds. It is facilitated by a certified, licensed speech-language pathologist with support from graduate student clinicians.

    • Days/times: Mondays and Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Speech Stars II  
A comprehensive therapy program for preschool children combining individual and group therapy to facilitate correct production of speech sounds.  It is designed to help increase speech intelligibility for children who have just a few speech sounds in error. It is facilitated by a certified, licensed speech-language pathologist with support from graduate student clinicians.

Stuttering

Programs for children who have difficulty with disruptions or dysfluencies in verbal speech.

Speak Out - A Group for Children who Stutter

Speak Out’s philosophy is that talking should be fun. The program was developed to provide an opportunity to learn fluency enhancing strategies and to practice them in a fun environment that enhances carryover into everyday speech. Each session will consist of one-on-one, small group and large group therapy and will be run by UT Dallas speech-language pathology students under the supervision of a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist.

Speak Out:

  • Is for elementary-age children who stutter
  • Provides a fun atmosphere where children learn and practice new strategies to improve their speech fluency
  • Provides an opportunity to interact with other children who stutter in a safe and nurturing atmosphere
  • Offers a family-centered approach to helping children who stutter not only become more fluent but also deal better with their stuttering
  • Offers family and parent training sessions
  • Location: Callier Center Richardson
  • February 7th – April 25th
  • Days/Times: Thursday afternoons, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  • Private Pay Cost: $90 per session

Y.E.S.S. (Youth Experience Stuttering Support)
A support group for school-age children who stutter. The group is led by certified, licensed speech-language pathologists with the support of graduate student clinicians. Parents are asked to attend.

Specific goals of the group are to:

    • Help children who stutter learn more about stuttering, realize they are not alone, feel good about themselves and have fun.
    • Assist parents of children who stutter by providing education, emotional support and a sense of empowerment.
    • Facilitate communication between children who stutter and their parents as they face the challenge of stuttering.

    • Days/Times: Last Thursday of each month from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. (except December)

Feeding Disorders

Programs for children who have difficulty with oral-motor and sensory skills needed for eating/drinking

Food and Fun
Food and Fun is pediatric feeding therapy that addresses the oral motor, sensory, social, and play aspects of feeding in a group setting, as well as provides parents with education and support. Participation in Food and Fun is meant to complement individual outside therapy. The group is led by a licensed speech-language pathologist with support from student clinicians. It meets one morning a week for 1 ½ hours.

    • Sessions: February 1, 2013 - April 26, 2013 (no sessions on March 8 and March 15)

STEPS (Supportive Treatment of Eating in PreschoolerS)
STEPS provides a small-group intervention program for preschoolers with moderate to severe motor-based feeding disorders and accompanying sensory-motor issues.

The program is designed to facilitate improved oral motor skills for feeding while providing hands-on training for parents. Strategies to support stability and function during feeding, as well as normal development of feeding skills, are taught. The group is led by a licensed speech-language pathologist with support from graduate student clinicians.

Delayed Language

Programs for children with difficulty understanding and producing verbal language.

Out & About: Helping Kids Achieve Social Success

    • Is for older elementary students with high functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Asperger’s disorder, or a social/pragmatic language impairment
    • Is a group social-communication experience
    • Is designed to improve communication and peer interaction skills in children who exhibit difficulty with social skills.

The Out & About program combines structured pragmatic language therapy with fun experiences and community outings so children have opportunities to practice their communication skills.

PLDP (Preschool Language Development Program)
PLDP is a therapeutic program designed for children with language disorders. It is run by a speech-language pathologist and six to eight graduate student clinicians each semester, to maintain a ratio of two or three children for every one clinician. 

The program uses a classroom environment and developmentally appropriate activities within thematic units to address individual speech and language goals.  The goal of the program is to create a natural environment through which children can improve communication abilities with adults and same-age peers in order to prepare themselves to be successful in mainstream preschool or kindergarten classrooms.

SmILE (Small-group Intervention for Language Emergence)
This group program is designed to facilitate language development in young children. The curriculum is organized by content themes in preschool routines that are utilized to provide intensive language intervention and social skills development. The program is led by a certified, licensed speech-language pathologist with the support of graduate student clinicians.

    • Location: Callier Center Dallas and Callier Center Richardson
    • Ages: 2-3 years

        • Callier Dallas: Wednesdays and Fridays 10:30 a.m. - noon or Tuesdays and Thursdays
          8:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
        • Callier Richardson: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 a.m. - 10 a.m., 10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

SKILL (Strategic Knowledge in Listening and Learning)
SKILL is a six-week summer group program designed for school-age kids (ages 7-12) who need help with listening and organizational skills.

The program will focus on:

    • Identifying key words for increased understanding.
    • Organizing time and belongings for increased efficiency.
    • Listening and following directions.
    • Self-advocacy skills.
    • Location: Callier Richardson
    • $90 per session, plus a $75 activity fee.
      This program may be insurance eligible.

The Language Group at Callier Center in Richardson

    • Is for elementary-age children who have a language disorder
    • Provides engaging and purposeful activities to enable children to learn and practice new language comprehension and expression strategies
    • Offers an opportunity to interact with other children during whole-group language activities, such as cooking and science experiments
    • Offers small-group time designed to focus on the child’s targeted language goals.

The Language Group is designed to target receptive and expressive language skills that children in grades 1 - 4 need in order to achieve social and academic success. Goals targeted include categorizing, comparing/contrasting, describing, defining, synonyms/antonyms, analogies, story concepts, telling a personal narrative, sequencing, sentence expansion, and problem solving.
