Exposure to loud sound can damage hearing. The louder the sound and the longer the exposure, the more dangerous the sound is to hearing.
Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is usually painless and occurs over time as a result of frequent exposure to loud sounds. But it can occur from just one exposure to an extremely loud noise.
Adults who engage in behaviors that expose them to loud sound - such as iPods and MP3 players, concerts, power tools, lawn and garden power equipment, gunfire, loud recreational vehicles and motorcycles - should be fitted with custom-made ear protection.
