We fundamentally believe that everyone should have the same opportunity to achieve his or her goals in a challenging global and diverse community. At the UTD Office of Diversity and Community Engagement, we apply that vision of diversity not just to race and ethnicity but to socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, accessibility, religion, cultural heritage, nationality—basically, any perceived difference that can be used to divide rather than to unite.
We don’t just tolerate these differences; we embrace them. Diversity brings new ideas, new ways of thinking and new approaches to learning and problem-solving. We celebrate diversity and believe it is the greatest strength of our University, our state and our nation.
Diversity in a shrinking world
Technology is making our world more connected every day, so UTD students have to be able to succeed within an increasingly diverse global environment. We are giving them that opportunity by making our UT Dallas learning community a microcosm of that exciting, challenging global environment.
To do this, we enhance communication on diversity issues. We recruit, retain and promote underrepresented minority faculty and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We provide a welcoming haven through the Galerstein Women’s Center. And we foster partnership with community organizations to increase student diversity at UT Dallas.
Invest in the future
As we strive to become a Tier One research university, we must embrace, enhance and celebrate diversity. We seek scholarships for women and underrepresented minorities in STEM, bolstered by the creation of a Center of Excellence for Diversity in STEM. We also plan a Distinguished Diversity Lecture Series to bring the most dynamic thinkers and educators to UT Dallas. With your support, we can seize the opportunities that will shape our future.
