THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING:

Creating the Future

Supporters' commitments and contributions ensure the future success of UT Dallas through endowments and opportunity funds that are of permanent benefit to the University. Gifts have created a new future through enhancing the campus environment as well as creating innovative new areas of study.

The University of Texas at Dallas' campus enhancement project is made possible by private support. Much of the support was provided by Margaret McDermott, wife of Eugene McDermott, UT Dallas and Texas Instruments co-founder. More than 20 Campus Enhancement Funds were also created by individuals who named elements of the enhancement, including trees and water features.

EDITH O'DONNELL INSTITUTE OF ART HISTORY

Founded in 2014, the Edith O'Donnell Institute of Art History unites the University's focus on science with the scholarship and research demands of art historians.

The institute, established through a $17 million gift from longtime patroness of the arts Edith O'Donnell, supports five endowed chairs and 10 endowed fellowships. Led by Dr. Richard Bretell, the institute focuses on the relationships among the visual arts, science and technology.

As a member of the first group of graduate fellows, Debra DeWitte analyzes exhibit catalogues from 19th-century Paris. She is enrolled in the University's aesthetic studies doctoral program. The travel support provided by the institute has been crucial for her detailed review of French exhibit catalogues, many of which are one of a kind.

James Rodriguez BA'05, another institute fellow, interprets double-sided Byzantine icons. He earned a bachelor's degree at UT Dallas in literary studies and is completing a doctoral dissertation at Yale. He said that returning to his alma mater has been a good decision. "I am so grateful. I get to keep doing what I love and I'm given the freedom and time to think, to teach and to speak at conferences."

Both researchers benefit from offices that encourage collaboration with colleagues in the institute. For DeWitte, the ability to incorporate data analytics with art history as she has done with the assistance of Associate Professor Maximilian Schich has been especially useful. "He has been a huge help to me. There are more than 10,000 drawings from this period, but I might only know what 50 of them look like. I can get a better sense of the remainder through data analysis of the catalogs."

Opportunity Funds

BRIDGE TO OUR FUTURE

Garry C. Miller Jr. BS'07

Opportunity Funds — unrestricted permanent endowments that can support any part of the University — provide the means to say "yes" to a number of educational initiatives and activities that contribute to the academic environment. Supporters established more than 80 Opportunity Funds during the campaign, providing scholarships, enabling research, enhancing athletics and bringing distinguished artists to campus.

Garry C. Miller Jr. BS'07 studied finance and economics. A National Merit quarterfinalist, Miller received a full scholarship and is a member of the second class of the Academic Bridge Program (ABP).

ABP, which helps high-potential, first-generation college students complete college educations, has a graduation rate of approximately 70 percent, which exceeds national averages.

In addition to receiving mentoring and tutoring assistance, ABP students participate in cultural awareness activities and community service projects.

Miller said he decided to establish the Bridge to Our Future Opportunity Fund as a way to honor the great leaders and mentors who helped chart a path for him through his days at the University. Since earning a master's degree in engineering and operations management at the University of New Haven, Miller has an even stronger sense of gratitude to Academic Bridge.

The program helped instill a standard of excellence and fostered a culture of achievement, he said. "As iron sharpens iron, we too, as a collective body, push and motivate each other to attain higher levels and reach for our potential. May this endowment serve as a supporting beam in this essential bridge enabling future students to step forward into their destiny."
