Academic Credit or Transcript Notation
Students at UT Dallas have the option to pursue academic credit for an internship. The internship program staff at the Career Center can help students to determine the process for getting academic credit through their major or department if desired. If students are not eligible for credit or are not interested in this as an option, getting a transcript notation is another way to have an internship officially recognized by the university. Please read on for further details.
Please note: International students on an F-1 visa are required to be enrolled for internship credit to gain approval for Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Please see the International Students section of this website for more information.
Academic Credit
A student who is interested in obtaining academic credit for an internship must pursue this option in advance of beginning the internship. Internships may be taken for upper-level elective credit depending on the student’s degree program requirements. Occasionally, a general elective may be used to obtain academic credit for an internship. When students meet with an Internship Coordinator, they will be given information on the requirements and the process for getting internship credit approved through their major or school.
The Career Center currently offers the following internship courses: ISAH 4V88 — Internship in Arts & Humanities, BIS 4310/MAIS 5V04 — Cooperative Education, and PSY 4395/CLDP 4395 — Co-op Fieldwork. BIS 4310 and MAIS 5V04 are generally open to students from a variety of majors. The schools of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, General Studies, Management, and Economic, Political, and Policy Sciences offer additional internship classes. Please contact your internship coordinator for more information.
Transcript Notation
A student who is not eligible or who is not interested in obtaining academic credit for an internship may opt instead for a transcript notation. A transcript notation is an official note on the UT Dallas transcript that shows a 0 credit “co-op” class. Getting a transcript notation is a simple process with many valuable outcomes. These include:
- Receive official university recognition for the internship.
- Employers, graduate, and professional schools will know that the completed internship was sanctioned by the university.
- The university can advocate for the student if there are any problems at the internship site.
- It will help to evaluate the internship and site for future students.
A student who is interested in having a transcript notation for an internship experience must complete all steps as described in Eligibility and Process, and must complete internship evaluations at the end of the semester as instructed by the Internship Coordinator. The Internship Coordinator will have the student fill out a brief form to request the notation.
