Searching for Internships

For many students, searching for and obtaining an appropriate internship is not a quick process. The Career Center encourages students to begin searching for internships at least one full semester in advance of when they would like to start. Students are also encouraged to utilize as many resources as possible in searching for an appropriate internship position.

The UTD CareerWorks system is one place for students to search for internship positions. The Career Center works with many different employers to post a variety of positions for students in various majors. Students will only have access to internships in UTD CareerWorks after they have met with an Internship Coordinator. To search for internships in UTD CareerWorks:

  • Log in to your UTD CareerWorks account.

  • Scroll over to the “Jobs and Internships” tab on the menu bar

  • Select Internship/Co-op Jobs

  • You will see a list of internship opportunities

  • Click on the Job ID and read the job description and qualifications carefully

  • Submit your resume ONLY to those positions for which you are ELIGIBLE, QUALIFIED, and HAVE AN INTEREST. There may be internships that you are eligible and qualified to apply for, but are of no interest to you (i.e., unpaid, too far away, or is in a field that is not what you want to do).

When searching in UTD CareerWorks, you should also click on “Jobs with Interview Schedules” to find out if any employers will be conducting on-campus interviews for internship opportunities. To learn more about on-campus interviewing, please see the On-Campus Recruiting Guide for Students.

In addition to searching through UTD CareerWorks, students should consider the following:

  • Networking— with faculty, family/friends, other students

  • Internet Research — see the Career Related Websites section of this website

  • Informational Interviews with professionals in your chosen career field

  • Attending Career Expos and Forums

Students who utilize a number of methods in conducting their internship and job searches will have a higher likelihood of success. The Internship Coordinators in the Career Center can help students with more ideas on improving their search if needed.

Remember, students MUST inform the Internship Coordinator when they have accepted an internship position. If you have received an internship offer but have never met with a coordinator, please contact the Career Center immediately to find out the next steps.
