"...Engberding's work could be classified as having affinity to numerous positions of Modernism, of 20th century art, but one soon realises that any categorisation or even definition misses the heart, the actual character of Engberdings work. For the range of conceivable reference points extends from Concept Art to individual mythologies, from Concrete Poetry to structural analysis. And in addition, one might list other cultural fields that have little to do with the art concept in its narrowest sense; an approach to the latest scientific insights, for example and a reversion to the erotomaniac imaginary worlds of the 19th century. All this reverberates in the works, and must surely be evaluated as one of their special qualities as well; for cultural history is not only preserved and continued in this way, but also - far more important - it is transformed into something new and original."

"...Well, the case of Engberding's shellac young men is rather like the fairy-tail in which a princess tyrannises her entire court. Somehow she has got in her mind that she wants a necklace made from dewdrops. ...Searching on the Internet for young men who could be Reinhold Engberding's son is roughly comparable to the hunt for dewdrops. ...First of all, there is a constant supply of new young men ...and besides, it is impossible to decide which ones you actually want. Ultimately, therefore, the young men will evade the claim to possession made by an artist who has somehow got into his head to ask all manner of young men could you be my son, perhaps? - I mean, just imagine that..."
