Chess Team

At UT Dallas, chess is more than a game for which we’re known. It’s a conversation starter that welcomes people from the community to our campus and allows for international exchange.

Whether Chess Team members come from America or Zambia, India or Moldova, they are united by the universal language of “checkmate.” The team represents a global community dedicated to chess excellence: 35 Grandmasters (GMs) and 27 International Masters (IMs) have played for UT Dallas since the program’s inception in 1996.

Winning outright or tying for first place in 10 Pan American Intercollegiate Championships, the chess team is a considerable force in collegiate play. The UT Dallas Chess Team is coached by Grandmaster and FIDE Trainer Julio Catalino Sadorra. With consistent achievement and guidance from a knowledgeable staff, the Chess Team is the most-recognized competitive group on campus.
