Chess Scholarships at UT Dallas

UT Dallas offers several chess scholarships to qualified student-players. We welcome candidates who are excellent students, strong chess competitors and will contribute to the UT Dallas Chess Program.

Undergraduate Chess Merit Scholarships

Scholarships are available for exceptionally strong chess players (USCF ratings above 2300). The amount of the award varies according to qualifications and can include scholarship money and tournament training support. Generally, only 10 people in the program at any one time can be recipients of Undergraduate Chess Merit scholarships.

Chess I Scholarship

  • In addition to eight semesters (four years) of complete support for tuition and mandatory fees, the Chess I Scholarship provides a $2,000 per semester cash stipend to defray the cost of books, supplies and other educational expenses. It has an additional $1,000 for meal costs each semester. It also provides a $1500 per semester contribution toward rental expenses at University on-campus housing. The $1,000 for meals must be used for a university meal plan in the freshman year, but not in subsequent years. The Chess Program Scholarship guidelines apply with regard to GPA requirements and probation.

Chess II Scholarship

  • This scholarship covers complete cost of tuition and mandatory fees through eight semesters (four years) of enrollment. In addition, the Chess II Scholarship provides a $1500 per semester contribution toward rental expenses incurred at University on-campus housing. The Chess Program Scholarship guidelines apply with regard to GPA requirements and probation.

Chess III Scholarship

  • Students awarded a Chess III Scholarship receive $2,000 per semester ($16,000 total) applied toward UT Dallas tuition and mandatory fees; and $1,500 per semester contribution ($12,000 total) toward rental expenses at UT Dallas' on-campus housing. This award is good for four years (eight semesters). The Chess Program Scholarship guidelines apply with regard to GPA requirements and probation.
Graduate Chess Scholarship

Chess I.g Scholarship - In addition to four semesters (two years) of complete support for tuition and mandatory fees for students seeking a two year masters degree, the Chess I.g Scholarship provides a $2,000 per semester cash stipend to defray the cost of books, supplies and other educational expenses. Recipients also get an $1,000 for meal costs each semester. It also provides a $1500 per semester contribution toward rental expenses for housing. Recipients are expected to qualify for and play on a UT Dallas Chess Team, maintain a GPA of at least 3.0, complete at least 9 graduate hours each semester, contribute to the community service activities of the UT Dallas Chess Club, and follow the Chess Team Rules. These graduate Chess Scholarships are for top-rated players. Only graduate students, who are at the GM and IM level, should apply.

Tournament-Based Chess Scholarships

Each year, UT Dallas offers several Chess Scholarships to chess tournament winners at the local, state, and national level. The Chess Scholarship (I, II, or III) may vary from year to year for the events. For students enrolling in fall 2011, all Chess Scholarships will pay tuition and fees at the Fall 2012 rates through Summer 2015. There will also be $1,500 per semester contribution toward rental expenses at UT Dallas' on-campus housing. Chess II and III scholarships may be upgraded to the Chess I level if the student's academic qualifications merit an upgrade.

Scholarship Requirements

All scholarships are only for students who are accepted to and matriculate at UT Dallas. To retain the award, the student must earn a 3.0 GPA or better each semester and a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better at the conclusion of each academic year. Students must also complete a minimum of 15 unique UT Dallas credit hours per semester and complete a total of 30 unique UT Dallas credit hours before the conclusion of their freshman academic year, 60 unique UT Dallas credit hours before the conclusion of their sophomore academic year, 90 unique UT Dallas credit hours before the conclusion of their junior academic year, and 120 unique UT Dallas credit hours before the conclusion of their senior academic year. All recipients of chess scholarships are expected to qualify for and play on a UT Dallas Chess Team, contribute to the community service activities of the UT Dallas Chess Club, and follow the Chess Team Rules.

To apply for any chess scholarship, first submit a Recruiting Form to the chess program director Jim Stallings. For full consideration, chess scholarship applications for each Fall semester must be complete by May 1 immediately prior for international applicants and July 1 for U.S. applicants. Applicants for any chess scholarship must take the SAT1 or ACT, unless they already have completed two full years of university studies. Non-native speakers must also take an English Proficiency Exam, such as the TOEFL, IELT, or PET.

Maintenance

Maintaining Chess Scholarships: Once a scholarship is granted, these guidelines will apply to ensure a student is still eligible to continue benefitting from the scholarship.
