Internship Program Admissions

The SCC serves as the primary mental health service provider for the UT Dallas campus, a rapidly growing institution of approximately 27,000 students. UT Dallas is a diverse community comprised of 23% International students, 31% Anglo students, 22% Asian-American students, 13% Hispanic, 5% African-American, and 4% Bi or Multi-racial students. The SCC provides brief individual and couple counseling, crisis intervention, outreach and liaisonships with other campus entities, and extensive group therapy options.  

Applicants for the SCC internship positions must be doctoral students currently enrolled in APA-accredited counseling or clinical psychology programs. At the time of application, applicants must have obtained 400 intervention hours, 200 of which are hours of direct service with adult populations, which includes intakes, individual, couple, and group therapy hours. Applicants must have successfully passed their comprehensive examinations and received approval for their dissertation proposal no later than the ranking deadline for the APPIC Match. Applicants must also have completed all appropriate coursework prior to beginning internship.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate interest and experience working in university counseling centers through practicum and employment experiences. The SCC is also seeking applicants that express an interest in exploring personal and professional integration and that are interested in an internship that utilizes a relational, "use of self" model, focusing on self-reflection and awareness. Consistent with the values of the center and the training program, the SCC seeks applicants that demonstrate a commitment and value to issues of diversity. Preference will also be given to applicants having prior experience with brief therapy and with group therapy.  Lastly, preference will also be given to applicants who have received approval for their dissertation proposals by the application deadline.

Total Direct Contact Intervention Hours: 400 hours (200 of the 400 must be with adult populations)

Other Required Minimum Criteria:

  • Graduate program must be APA accredited program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
  • All coursework must be completed prior to internship.
  • Comprehensive Exams must be successfully completed by the ranking deadline
  • Dissertation proposals must be approved by the ranking deadline.
