Student Counseling Center

Counseling and Related Services

We provide programs and services designed to assist students in achieving emotional well-being necessary to success. Help is given to students to manage academic and personal demands more effectively. Our staff of licensed psychologists/counselors is available by appointment or in times of emergency. All counseling is confidential.

Who is Eligible for Counseling

Enrolled UTD students are eligible for individual counseling sessions, and small group sessions.

Students new to the Student Counseling Center, or returning after at least a semester's absence, will start with an intake session. They will then receive an recommendation for either individual or couple's counseling, group therapy, or an alternative treatment. In order to match scheduling and therapeutic needs, the assigned counselor may be a different person than the intake counselor.

During periods of peak requests for services, students may be assigned to a waiting list for a brief time. Emergencies will be handled promptly.

Students who will not be in school for the summer, but plan to return to UTD for Fall, will still be eligible for counseling services during the summer. They will be required to pay a small, one-time fee.

Having Academic Difficulties? Need a Letter?

Some students come to the Counseling Center at UT Dallas wanting assistance in obtaining special consideration because they are not doing well in a class. Their hope is that a letter from the Counseling Center will help them get out of academic trouble or be able to drop the course for non-academic reasons after the official deadline. Students may request that the Counseling Center provide a letter to “verify” personal problems that may have interfered with their academic performance.

Sometimes serious personal problems do interfere with one’s ability to concentrate on studies. Although counselors want to be supportive when they can, students need to understand that COUNSELORS CANNOT HELP CONFIRM DIFFICULTIES OF WHICH THEY HAVE NO PRIOR INFORMATION OR ONLY VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE.

If students have no counseling record other than an intake or a couple of counseling sessions, A LETTER MAY ONLY CONFIRM THAT THE STUDENT CAME TO THE STUDENT COUNSELING CENTER AND DISCLOSED DIFFICULTIES THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE AFFECTED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE EARLIER IN THE SEMESTER. This type of letter is usually not very helpful. However, if a student has been seen in counseling while experiencing these difficulties, counselors are more likely to be able to write a supportive letter.

Please talk to your counselor if you are experiencing personal difficulties that you believe are negatively impacting your academic performance.
