What is Being Done to Protect Social Security Number Privacy at the University?

The University of Texas at Dallas is aware of the issue of Social Security number (SSN) privacy. Many steps have already been taken to eliminate the use of SSN as the primary identifier on campus. Students have had access to services without being required to provide their SSNs since July 2006. Still, awareness of the potential problems and software improvements has been slow to grow.

In January 2005, The University of Texas at Dallas created a policy concerning the protection of SSNs.  Larry Wilson, Asst. Vice President for Human Resources Management was appointed the SSN Coordinator.  The University has complied with the requirements for the protection of SSNs outlined in The University of Texas System Business Procedures Memorandum 66.

As awareness grows, business processes are being changed; improvements are being made every day. However, constant vigilance and a healthy sense of caution are necessary to keep the systems we develop safe. This recent attack has underscored the importance of our work and gives even greater focus to our continuing effort to create better and safer systems.

We have been identifying and removing vulnerabilities, remediating weakness, and expanding the level of control we take on the campus computer network.

The University of Texas at Dallas gratefully acknowledges the assistance of The University of Texas at Austin in compiling this information.
