The Joseph G. Wood Award
Dr. Joseph G. Wood served as HPAC Director and professor of neuroscience from 1996 to 2007. Over his 45 year career, Dr. Wood shaped the founding of University of Texas medical schools in San Antonio and Houston, and served as chairman of the anatomy department at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine.
The University of Texas at Dallas is proud to honor the legacy of Dr. Wood in a way that will continue to recognize and support health professions students for years to come.
Each August, the Health Professions Advisory Committee will grant the Joseph G. Wood Award to the top medical or dental applicant from the University of Texas at Dallas, based upon:
- Scholarship - academic performance reflects a high level of understanding and commitment
- Leadership - mobilizing others within UT Dallas and in the community
- Service - significant efforts to benefit others demonstrate a commitment to the altruistic professions of medicine or dentistry
- Character - integrity, dependability, maturity, compassion, and interpersonal skills
The recipient receives a $500 cash award, a certificate suitable for framing, and a place on the award plaque in the Health Professions Advising Center. Special notification of the award will be sent to each of the professional schools to which the recipient applies.
2009 Winner - Felicity Lenes
Felicity Lenes participated in the Collegium V Honors Program, was a student government senator and vice president, won "2006-2007 Student Leader of the Year," and served as a Student Ambassador. Her volunteer efforts included tutoring elementary school children, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and working with charitable organizations to provide healthcare in Eastern Europe, the Sudan, and China. In her most recent international endeavor, Felicity helped provide clean water to earthquake victims in China and cyclone survivors in Myanmar.
A McDermott Scholar with a near perfect 3.99 GPA in Molecular Biology, Felicity combines intellect, personality, conscience, work ethic, ambition, compassion, and enthusiasm…within the context of humility and strength.
Felicity now attends Yale University School of Medicine.
2008 Winner - Conrad Rodriguez Capili
During his college years, Conrad pursued research, teaching, health care service, intensive ancillary training, public service, and missions--excelling at them all. He took a mature approach to exploring his interests and career options before combining his passions into a pursuit of medical missions, toward which he demonstrates a heartfelt dedication. A rich legacy of campus and community involvement further shows Conrad to be a born altruist. He is also a top scholar and graduated with a Child Learning and Development degree and a 4.0 GPA.
In recognition of these and other qualities, Conrad was admitted to and will attend the Mayo Medical School in fall of 2008.
