$6,000 in cash prizes to the winners. Over the three-day event, students can compete and attend master classes and concerts by internationally recognized guitarists.

Master guitarist David Russell coaches some of the finest young guitarists in the area and the world, including the UT Dallas Guitar Ensemble.

The top four contestants compete. Past finalists have come from countries such as Uruguay, Brazil, Finland, Nicaragua, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, France, the United States and Australia.

Concert by Gonzalo Molano

Gonzalo Molano won first prize at the First Annual Texas Guitar Competition. He has performed as a soloist with the Orquesta Nacional de Colombia, the Arizona Choir, the Arizona Symphony and several chamber music ensembles including the Arizona Contemporary Ensemble (ACE). He tours worldwide and is co-producer and editor of the popular online publication GuitarraMagazine.com.

Concert by David Russell
World renowned classical guitarist David Russell will perform the closing concert of the festival. An established musician of the highest caliber, Russell tours internationally displaying what the New York Times called his “talent of extraordinary dimension.” Legendary guitarist Andres Segovia complimented his “musicality and…technique.” Russell has released 23 albums since 1978. His CD Aire Latino won a Grammy Award in 2004 for the best instrumental soloist in classical music category. Russell has earned a variety of awards and honors throughout his career. In 1997, he was made a Fellow of London’s Royal Academy of Music. The town in which he grew up, Es Migjorn, designated him its “adopted son” and named a street after him in May of 2003. That November, the Conservatory of the Balearics awarded him its Medal of Honor. In 2005 after he won the Grammy, the Spanish town of Nigrán, where he lives, presented him with its silver medal.
