UTD's Center for Translation Studies, headed by Professor Rainer Schulte, has received both national and international recognition for the promotion of literary translations. The center is home to the American Literary Translators Association. With ALTA, the center supports the study and creation of literary translations, and it facilitates contacts and collaborations with writers, translators, and critics around the world.

The Center for Translation Studies has received grants from both the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities to promote the visibility and the importance of the translator and to introduce innovative teaching methods in literature and humanities programs. The center creates a community for students working on either Masters or Doctoral theses in the field of translation.
