Brian CossGraduate student in materials science and engineering
Why did you choose UT Dallas?
UTD offered me the best scholarship/lab capability combination.
What are you studying?
I’m researching advanced high-k dielectrics and metal gates for CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) technologies. This has large implications for chips that will start being manufactured early next year.
What’s great about studying here?
I’m close to my parents and other family. I’m in a large metropolis. The school seems to be mostly people like me, nerdy. Most importantly, though, my research is cutting-edge and has huge implications for companies like Intel, AMD and IBM.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
My life goal is a Ph.D. I want to get it physics, hopefully abroad. After that, it’s an open question. I have no idea where it will take me.
What do you like most about student life at UTD?
One of the nicest things about UTD is the diversity. There are students here, it seems, from every country. There are tons of opinions and cultures, but it’s all respected here. And if it weren’t for the diversity, by the way, I wouldn’t have met my girlfriend, who’s a Mexican exchange student.
