faq

Q: Do I have to retake an EE/TE/CE class when I have passed with a grade of C-?
A: To make satisfactory academic progress as an EE/TE/CE major, a student must meet all university requirements for academic progress and must earn a grade of C- or better in each of the major core courses. No “major requirement” course may be taken until the student has obtained a grade of C- or better in each of the prerequisites.

Q: What is 75-hour audit?
A: UTD policy requires all undergraduate students to meet with their academic adviser and audit their academic records when students have earned 75 hours, including transfer credits.

Q: What is the CS Placement Test?
A: Details can be found on the Office of Undergraduate Advising site.

Q: If I am on an older degree plan, do I follow the older prerequisites chart?
A: No. To keep up with current academic standards, course contents change from time to time, and so do the prerequisites associated with courses. Students should follow the most recent prerequisites requirements.

Q: When can’t I register myself online?
A: Freshmen and transfer students must register with their adviser for at least two semesters. Students will then be given online registration access by the registrar’s office.

Q: What is the ECS Mentor Program?
A: The ECS Mentor Program was developed to help all ECS students achieve the best possible results in major courses. Mentors are recruited from high standard ECS majors who have done excellent work in the courses.

Q: Is there anything I need to do prior to graduation?
A: Details are available on the registrar’s graduation page.

Q: How do I find out if a course will be offered again next semester?
A: Use the course lookup page.

Q: Who is my adviser and how do I contact my adviser?
A: Details can be found on the Office of Undergraduate Advising site.

Q: What scholarships can I apply for?
A: Information is available on the OUGA scholarship page and on the UT Dallas financial aid page.

Q: Can I drop a class if I’m on scholastic probation?
A: A student on scholastic probation must meet with an academic adviser prior to registration. Such students may not register for more than 12 semester hours, they must earn at least a 2.20 GPA each semester while on probation, and they may not drop or withdraw from classes. Violation of these conditions may lead to the student’s suspension from the university.

Q: Will an Academic Excellence Scholarship cover my graduate courses?
A: Yes, as long as you are an undergraduate with an AES and have permission to take graduate-level courses. For more information, visit the AES scholarship office.

Q: What happens if I am placed on academic probation or dropped status?
A: See the online catalog.

Q: How do I find out if my transfer credits have been accepted?
A: Discuss this with your academic adviser as soon as you are admitted to UT Dallas.

Q: Do my AP or test scores automatically get me course credits on the Student Information System?
A: Once official test score transcripts are received at UTD and appear on SIS, students should meet with their adviser to petition for the scores be applied to specific class credits.

Q: Can the university change my schedule, instructors or classroom locations after I enroll?
A: Schedule, instructor and classroom location may change before or after classes start. Students should always verify class information through Galaxy before the first day of class.

Q: What should I do if I want to take classes off campus?
A: Check the appropriate transfer guide, and then meet with your adviser to ensure classes taken off campus will contribute to fulfilling your degree plan requirements. If so, your adviser can then help you fill out a pre-approval form and turn it in to the registrar’s office for official approval.

Q: What does “fast track” mean?
A: Please see the Fast-Track Programs page.

Q: What does “Get Doc” mean?
A: Please see the Get-Doc Fellowship Program page here.

Q: What is the best way to get my e-mail answered?
A: Always use your UTD e-mail account when communicating with school offices and officials, including your adviser. For details, see the catalog section below:

Correspondence: E-mail
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. E-mail raises some issues, however, concerning security and the identity of each individual in an e-mail exchange.

As a result, all official student e-mail correspondence is sent only to a student’s UTD e-mail address. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of individuals corresponding and the security of the transmitted information.

UT Dallas furnishes each student with a free e-mail account that is to be used in all communication with university personnel. The Department of Information Resources provides a method for students to have their UT Dallas e-mail forwarded to other accounts. To activate a student computer account and set e-mail for forwarding, visit http://netid.utdallas.edu/.
