Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

* Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junioer class during the previous academic year.
*Number of awards: up to 300 annually
* Amount of award: tuition, fees, books and room and board up to $7500 per year. May receive up to two years of support.

Conditions of Eligiblity:

  • Be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education. "Sophomore" is defined as a student who plans two more years of full-time undergraduate study. Sophomore awardees can expect to receive two years maximum of support. "Junior" is defined as a student who plans one more year of full-time undergraduate study. Junior awardees can expect to receive one yer maximum support.
  • Have a college grade-point average of at least "B" (or equivalent) and be in the upper fourth of his/her class.
  • United States citizen or a resident alien. Nominations for resident aliens must include a letter of the nominee's intent to obtain U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the Alien Registration Card.

Nomination Procedures

The Institution of Higher Education: All candidates are nominated by their college or university.

Nomination Materials

Nominations must include:

  • Institution Nomination Form, which verifies the nominee's eligibility and academic status and formally transmits the nomination to the review committee. This document must be completed and signed by the Faculty Representative or the nomination cannot be considered.
  • Nominee Information Form, which affirms the nominee's wish to be considered for the scholarship.
  • Nominee's Essay, which is written by the student and relates to the student's chosen career.
  • Three Independent Evaluation of Nominee Forms: 1) Faculty member who can discuss the nominee's potential for a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering; 2) Faculty member in the nominee's field of study; 3) another individual/faculty member who can attest to the nominee's potential.
  • Transcripts of the nominee's college grades, including fall semester if available. Nominees must also provide a transcript of their high school grades.
