Disability Services

About Us

Mission

The mission of Disability Services is to encourage students with disabilities to be engaged in a full academic experience that prepares them for life by removing some of the barriers to education they may experience and by providing equal access to qualifying students to all University courses and programs.

History

Disability Services began at UT Dallas in 1977. Margaret Kidd was the coordinator of services for both international students and students with disabilities. Services for students with disabilities were implemented in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibited disability related discrimination in any program receiving federal funds. In 1982 Gloria Williams assumed the responsibilities of services for international, minority and veteran students, and students with disabilities.

During the next sixteen years, the number of students with disabilities at UT Dallas steadily increased. This growth prompted the University to create a Disability Services Coordinator position. In addition to this, UT Dallas created a separate department dedicated solely to aiding students with disabilities. Currently, Kerry Tate serves as the Disability Services Coordinator and the department of Disability Services, with its 3 full time staff members, assists over 200 students.
