Accommodations
Campus Physical Environment
The UT Dallas campus has a growing student population, and the campus physical environment is growing along with the students. New buildings are flanked by developing garden areas so that functionality combines with beauty. The concepts of universal design are evident in these initiatives, as we seek to ensure campus accessibility for all students.
While our goal is for all students to have equal access to the campus physical environment, we recognize that, periodically, obstacles may arise (e.g., nonworking automatic doors, low hanging tree branches over sidewalks, etc.). If you encounter any barriers in the campus physical environment, please email the Disability Services Specialist Dolores La Maison at disabilityservice@utdallas.edu or you may reach her at 972-883-2098. The Office of Disability Services then will work with campus facilities staff to determine the best way to remediate the situation.
Classroom Accommodations
As UT Dallas grows, more state-of-the-art classroom facilities are constructed. Increasingly, aspects of universal design are incorporated into building development to ensure accessibility for all students. However, occasionally, students may experience a classroom assignment that presents them with a challenge. Students must contact the Disability Services Specialist Dolores La Maison at disabilityservice@utdallas.edu or at 972-883-2098 if they encounter any problems with accessibility in classrooms. Disability Services will then work with your instructor to determine what types of classroom accommodations may be appropriate. This could include changing seating assignments, switching out equipment used in the classroom, or identifying specialized equipment that can be used by the student and/or instructor. In some instances, classrooms may be relocated to correct accessibility problems.
Housing Accommodations
Many of our University housing units are accessible to students with disabilities. However, you must provide notice if you need accommodations such as wheelchair accessible facilities, devices/alarms for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, or if you have other issues. Early notification and complete information about your needs, including supporting documentation, allows us to assist you more effectively.
If you have a disability that may require special housing considerations, please submit a written description of your needs to the Residential Life office, with your housing application, at least 30 days prior to the date you plan to arrive on campus. Supporting medical and psychological documentation must be sent to Disability Services, with a copy of the written description of your specific need for accommodations. Please indicate that you have submitted your housing application.
While students are not required to register for services with Disability Services when requesting housing accommodations, you are encouraged to do so. Disability Services provides academic, physical and other access for students in an environment emphasizing variations, not limitations. Students seeking to register with Disability Services should contact the Disability Services Specialist Dolores La Maison at disabilityservice@utdallas.edu or at 972-883-2098 as soon as possible.
Testing Accommodations
Disability Services provides accommodations testing for students with disabilities. To aid the office in determining the best accommodations for each student’s individual circumstances, you must provide documentation of your disability that includes a discussion of the resulting impairments. (See Documentation for more on documentation requirements.) Specific policies regarding testing accommodations can be found in our Procedures for Obtaining Alternative Testing handbook. ![]()
