Background
The year 2011 marked the creation of the University of Texas at Dallas' recognition award for Inclusive Excellence & Intercultural Engagement (IEIE). The IEIE award is offered through the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement and the Office of Educational Enhancement, with the support of the Committee for Support of Diversity and Equity. This award is presented to a UT Dallas faculty member whose teaching exemplifies the ideals of the University in creating a classroom culture free from discrimination; an inclusive classroom in which all students are free to question, discuss, and express their feelings and beliefs. In such a classroom, students can master course content while learning to respect and interact productively with those whose backgrounds, beliefs and customs differ from their own. In this educational climate, students learn to succeed and lead in our shrinking, interconnected, multicultural world.
Criteria
The award specifically recognizes a teacher who:- Excels at guiding students in developing their ability to engage with respect and learn from people who have ideas, experiences and points of view that differ from their own.
- Creates courses that encourage students to expand their horizons and learn about different
peoples, cultures and institutions in ways that significantly affects their lives, their view of
the world, and their place and role in it. - Fosters mutual respect and optimal creativity in a classroom environment where people with
varied backgrounds, perspectives and life experiences share ideas and work productively
together. - Creates a positive learning environment a place where all students regardless of their gender,
race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, national origin
and/or socio-economic status are engaged and encouraged to participate.
Nomination Process
All those who teach at UT Dallas are eligible, and while anyone (faculty, staff, student, alumni or community member) can nominate, at least one student or former student must provide a letter of support for each nomination.
