Black History Month Kick-off Event
“A Peek into Black America”
Tuesday, February 3, from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM, Student Union Galaxy Rooms
CNN’s Soledad O’Brien produced an acclaimed documentary entitled “Black in America” and began a dialog in many communities about the state of Blacks in America. Join us as we bring this discussion to UTD, with a panel of Faculty and off campus guest.
Topics will include: Health, Education, Economy, The Family and Relationships, and Mentoring Black Males. Guest panelist include: UTD Faculty Dr. David Ford, Dr. Susan McElroy, Dr. Betty Pace, Ms. Ellisha Money, The Family Place, and Mr. Kevin Mondy, Project Still I Rise.
UTD Cinematheque-Screening of Afro-Punk w/Director James Spooner

With over 80 interviews, and plenty of footage of mosh pits, stage diving, and punk rock, Spooner tries to understand what it means to be the lone mohawked black kid in a crowd of white punks. The film’s director, James Spooner, will be in attendance to answer questions and talk about Afro-Punk.

Come out and listen to the words of acclaimed poets alongside live musicians at SUAAB's Underground Poetry Circus, which takes place during UTD's Comet Nights. Students can present their own poetry during open mic. Musical act Emotion Brown and poet Twain will be featured.

Come out and join us in this annual Soul Food Feast catered by Sweet Georgia Brown Restaurant, as we Celebrate Black History Month. There will be music, fellowship and fun. Also learn more about how the Hip Hop Culture has impacted our world! Rap music is a multibillion dollar industry! However, very few people know the history of Hip-hop culture which spawned rap music. This presentation is multimedia based (images, audio and video) and covers the environment in which Hip-hop was born, its elements and the global response to the movement.

MLK Jr. Breakfast/Celebration, Jan. 15, 2009
Join the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement, the Multicultural Center and a host of student organizations as we sponsor the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast, Jan. 15, 2009. Breakfast will be served in the Student Union Galaxy Room at 8:30 a.m. The featured speaker is Mrs. Xernona Clayton (pictured), president of Trumpet Awards and Foundation.
