Community Champion Award

Mr. Terry Howard

 

Mr. Terry Howard is director of diversity and inclusion at Texas Instruments. In addition to training and consulting, Howard writes a monthly diversity column and is the chief architect of the company's annual diversity and inclusion learning labs for the CEO and top leaders. He is also the founder of the Global Diversity Connections Consortium and networking group, comprised of representatives from UT Dallas, The Hartford, Core Logic, FedEx, Nissan, First National Bank, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, UT Arlington, Fluor, Brown Forman and many other global firms.

Ms. Jessica Tsing

 

Ms. Jessica Tsing is an accounting and finance double major in her third year at UT Dallas. In her role as multicultural chair for the Student Union and Activities Advisory Board, she has actively helped to plan multiple diversity initiatives, including Chinese Night Market, Madrigals, and Hispanic Heritage Month activities. After graduation, Tsing plans to be a CPA for one of the top four accounting firms in the country.

Staff Diversity Award

Dr. Fatemeh Hassanipour

 

Dr. Fatemeh Hassanipour is assistant professor of mechanical engineering. She received her PhD from Southern Methodist University in 2009. Her research interests are in the broad area of thermal/fluid management and engineering. In addition, she has industrial experience in the area of HVAC and refinery piping, and is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Texas. Hassanipour is a recipient of Young Engineer of the Year award from ASME North Texas Section (2009), Oak Ridge Associated Universities Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty award (2010), ASHRAE Peanut Vinther award (2005), SMU Mechanical Engineering Department's best research award (2008) and best graduate student award (2008), and the ASME North Texas section student award (2008).

Dr. Ellen Greenwald

 

Dr. Ellen Greenwald is the diversity coordinator and a staff psychologist for the Student Counseling Center. She is involved in a myriad of diversity training activities, including a monthly diversity forum for staff and trainees. Greenwald presents not only traditional categories of diversity such as ethnicity and sexual orientation, but broader, often over-looked components, including sizism, educational attainment and privilege, spirituality, socioeconomic status and chronic health disabilities. Her openness about her own biases and struggles as an identified Jewish, lesbian, partnered mother has helped create a more sensitive, inclusive environment for staff and clients.

Dr. J. Michael Farmer

 

Dr. J. Michael Farmer specializes in the history, literature, thought and culture of early and medieval China. He holds a PhD in Chinese literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Farmer has published articles on various aspects of medieval China. His book, The Talent of Shu (2007), is a socio-intellectual history of early Sichuan told through a critical biography of a noted classicist and historian, Qiao Zhou. Farmer teaches several courses on Chinese history, including early, medieval, traditional and modern China, the Silk Roads, and women in traditional China. He translates literary, historical and philosophical texts from China's early medieval period and is engaged in a long-term project to translate the fourth century local history of Huayang guo zhi [Records of the States South of Mount Hua].
