Nomination Guidelines

Nominees should be current students, staff, faculty and student organizations. Nominees may also be a community member or community organization. Nominations will be accepted by all members of the UT Dallas community.

Nominations will be evaluated for outstanding accomplishments in achieving and sustaining diversity and inclusion at the University of Texas at Dallas and the broader community.

Nominations will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the Vice President of Diversity and Community Engagement inclusive of representatives from the Student Equity Council, Staff Council and Committee for Support of Diversity and Equity.

All nominations are due by 5:00pm on Friday, January 30, 2015.

Selection Criteria

Please consider the following criteria when submitting nominations for the Diversity Award:

  • The nominee demonstrates a commitment and appreciation for diversity and inclusion
  • The nominee has provided leadership and direction in building a culture of inclusion and an appreciation for multicultural values on the UT Dallas campus and/or the community at large
  • The nominee has organized, conducted, and supported events , lectures, or activities that promote cross-cultural understanding, inclusion, and acceptance of individual and group differences

The award for the Inclusive Excellence Teaching Award (IEIE) specifically recognizes an instructor who:

  • Excels at guiding students in developing their ability to engage with respect and learn from people who have ideas, experiences and points of view that differ from their own.
  • Creates courses that encourage students to expand their horizons and learn about different peoples, cultures and institutions in ways that significantly affects their lives, their view of the world, and their place and role in it.
  • Fosters mutual respect and optimal creativity in a classroom environment where people with varied backgrounds, perspectives and life experiences share ideas and work productively together.
  • Creates a positive learning environment a place where all students regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, national origin and/or socio-economic status are engaged and encouraged to participate.

Student

Diversity Award Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the $1000 scholarship that accompanies the Student Diversity Award, the student must:

  • Be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Texas at Dallas in good standing
  • Possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Participate in events sponsored by one or more of the departments of the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement: Galerstein Women's Center, Community Engagement, Faculty Diversity, Institutional Diversity Initiatives or Multicultural Center
  • The following are recommended but not required:
    • Documentation of at least 50 hours of volunteer service at a local non-profit organization
    • Leadership or involvement in campus organizations

Student Diversity Award Nomination Checklist

The following documents must accompany the nomination form.

  • Nomination Statement
  • Bio (250 words or less)
  • Resume (1 page)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (One academic reference required)
  • Proof of attendance at Office of Diversity and Community Engagement events
  • Documentation of volunteer service hours on organization letterhead, if applicable
  • Documentation of involvement in campus organizations, if applicable

Nominations must be fully substantiated and reflect a careful and conscientious evaluation of the nominee. Achievements should align closely to the selection criteria and be explained in a way that can be easily understood and appreciated by the general public.

Staff

Diversity Award Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Staff Diversity Award, the staff member must be a part-time or full-time staff member.

  • Resume (1 page)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (One employer reference preferred)

Student Organization

Diversity Award Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Student Organization Diversity Award, the student organization must:

  • Be a registered student organization at the University of Texas at Dallas in good standing with the Student Organization Center (SOC)

Student Organization Diversity Award Nomination Checklist

The following documents must accompany the nomination form.

  • Nomination Statement
  • Organizational Profile (250 words or less)
  • A proposal of how your organization intends to utilize the cash prize to advance the UT Dallas commitment to embrace, enhance, and celebrate diversity.

To be eligible for the Community Champion Diversity Award, the community member/organization must be a community partner who has provided support for UT Dallas' diversity and inclusion efforts.

  • Documentation of events that have been organized and/or conducted that promote cross-cultural understanding, inclusion, and acceptance of individual and group differences

To be eligible for the Award for Inclusive Excellence and Intercultural Engagement, instructors may be anyone who teaches at the University of Texas at Dallas.

  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (At least one letter provided by a current or former student required)

The Diversity Award will be presented by the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement at the 6th Annual Diversity Awards on Thursday, April 23, 2015.
