In early 2000, the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science received approval from the University of Texas System Board of Regents for an additional engineering building. The new structure will double the school's size and will provide 10 new classrooms, many new offices and laboratories, and a new student resource center. The 150,000 square-foot facility, which will be constructed using both state and private funds, will open its doors to students and faculty in August 2002.

Instead of holding an ordinary groundbreaking ceremony, the University held a virtual groundbreaking ceremony on March 22, 2001, in which a specially created film was projected for members and friends of the University.
