Environmental Management:
Air Emissions / Control:
The EH&S Department is responsible for the monitoring of gaseous emissions on the campus of UTDallas, in accordance with state and national emissions laws. Annual calculations are taken to determine type and amount of pollutants emitted from generators, paint shops, print services, laboratories, animal facilities, the automotive fleet and other emission facilities on campus. Currently, UTD does not produce a high enough level of emissions to merit regulatory action or a government permit, as seen under Title 5 of the Clean Air Act. Third party experts are consulted for emission visability calculations, as well as for the management of generators on campus. These consultants maintain standardized equipment and work to ensure efficiency in UTD's emission generators. The school is also researching materials exchange concerning lead batteries, light ballasts, monitors, oils for fuel blending, and paints. Development of pilot projects for the exchange of Mercury thermometers to alcohol based units is currently under way. Other "green" UTD programs of the future may include developing a fleet information database for environmental research, monitoring of air conditioning and heating units, proper construction protocols, and use of alternative forms of insulation in campus buildings. Storm water runoff is simply rain water or snow melt that runs off the land and into streams, rivers, and lakes. When storm water runs through sites of industrial activity, it may pick up pollutants and transport them into national waterways and alter natural ecosystems, restrict swimming areas, and affect the navigability of the nation's waters. To help curb the problem of storm water runoff pollution the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has developed a program under the Clean Water Act. A major part of this program is the NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) which requires construction industries to register for a discharge permit. Many industrial activities can apply under a general permit. To find out if you can register under a general permit, contact your area office. UTD’s EH&S department is responsible for ensuring the use of proper drainage systems for construction projects which are not covered by a general discharge permit. The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) require persons who present hazardous materials for shipment and shippers to meet DOT/IATA hazardous materials regulations. These regulations require trained personnel to appropriately package, label, and have correct accompanying paperwork at the time items are presented for shipment. Personnel that prepare or offer shipments of hazardous materials or dangerous goods must complete DOT/IATA training requirements:

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for the collection and proper disposal of chemical waste, batteries, and other hazardous materials used in labs at UTD. To ensure that these tasks are performed safely and in an organized manner, certain procedures must be followed by anyone requiring a chemical pick-up.
