Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Configuration for eLearning
You must have one and only one version of Java installed on your computer for eLearning to function properly. If you have more than one version or an unsupported version, you will pass the Browser Check upon logging into eLearning. However, you will STILL have difficulties with eLearning. The auto update feature of Java usually installs the newest update without removing previously installed updates. Consequently, you may have multiple versions installed without your knowledge. We recommend that you disable the auto update feature for Java using the instructions below.
Supported Versions of
JRE
The most current version of JRE is now supported
by eLearning.
· Difficulty logging into eLearning
· Browser hangs when you click on a course
· Chat does not work
· Email does not work properly
· A little red x appears where the My Computer icon should be when you attempt to attach a file to a discussion post, assignment, or email
· Course listings do not display properly on the My Course list.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Control Panel.
3. Click on the Java icon. If you do not have a Java icon, skip to How to Install JRE
4. Click on the Java tab.
5. Click on the View button under Java Applet Runtime Settings (the top box). If there is more than one listing in this box, skip to How to Remove JRE Versions.
6. Click on the View button under Java Application Runtime Settings. If there is more than one listing in this box, skip to How to Remove JRE versions.
If only one listing appears, make sure it is Java 1.6 or higher. Your JRE is configured properly if only one supported JRE version appears in both View… buttons.
1. Open a web browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc).
2. Go to the following URL: http://www.java.com/en/
3. Click on the Free Java Download button at the top of the page.
4. Follow the instructions in the Instructions link to download and install the offline version of Java.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Control Panel.
3. Click on the Java icon. If you do not have a Java icon, skip to How to Install JRE.
4. Click on the Update tab.
5. Uncheck box next to "Check for Updates Automatically".
6. Click the “Never Check” button in the dialogue box that pops up.
7. Click Ok.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Control Panel.
3. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
4. Click on the first Java Runtime Environment, J2SE Environment, or Java (TM) entry.
5. Click Remove.
6. Click OK.
Repeat the above steps for each Java entry listed. Follow the How to Install JRE instructions to download and install the latest version of JRE.
