When creating questions in Snap Surveys, it will help you to remember the following:
· Press [Enter] to create a new question.
· Press [Tab] to create a new section within the question you are working on.
To
select a different style of question to add to your survey, select from the
Question Style dropdown menu.
A.

– Large-type font, usually used for the title of a survey.
![]()
B.
Subtitle
– Medium-size font, smaller than title, larger than normal question text.

C.
Multi
Choice – Used to create multiple choice questions. (For information on creating multiple- and single-answer MC questions,
please see the Question Options – Multiple/Single Answer section of this
document.)

D.
Other –
Used to add an Other option to a Multi Choice question. Please note that in order to add the Other
question, you have to first create a completely separate question, then change that
question style to Other, at which time it will become part of the previous
question.

E.
Open
Ended – Used for short answer and paragraph responses. (For information on adjusting the size of the
response box, please see the Question Options – Box Size section of this
document.)

F.
Open First/Next
– Used for a series of similar open-ended questions that fall under the same
overall question heading. Please note
that in order to add the Open Next question, you have to first create a
completely separate question, then change the question type to Open Next, at which
time it will become part of the previous question. Or simply hitting the [Tab] key creates
another Open Next section for the question.

G.
Grid
First/Next – Used for a series of questions that have the same answer
options. Many times these are used for
asking a person’s opinion on something (i.e. Very Satisfied, Satisfied,
Neutral, Unsatisfied, Very Unsatisfied).

For many of the question styles, you can change the response
type by clicking on the Style Variable dropdown.
From the dropdown, choose Response.

For Multi Choice and Grid questions, you have the option of Single and Multiple answers.
![]()
Multi Choice –
Multiple – Respondent can choose more than one answer.

Multi Choice – Single
– Respondent can only choose one answer.

For Open Ended questions, you have the option requiring that the respondent enters a Quantity, Literal, Date, or Time.
![]()
Quantity – requires a numeric response
Literal – allows the respondent to enter any combination of letter, numbers or symbols as a response
Date – requires a date response
Time – requires a specific time as a response
If the respondent enters information that does not match
what is required, the respondent will receive an error message.

Columns can be used in Snap Surveys to organize your answer options. To do this, (while you have the question selected) click on the Style Variables dropdown and choose Columns.

Enter in the number of columns you want your answer options to be displayed in.

Snap allows you to adjust the size of the answer box for
open-ended questions (Open First/Next) and Other style questions. To do this, click the Style Variables
dropdown and choose Boxes.

Adjust the width of the box by increasing the number in the
Size field. To adjust the height of the
box, press the Control key and the + key ([Control] + [+]).

For Multi Choice and Grid questions, you can very easily
change the response layout into a dropdown box.
To do this, click the Style Variables dropdown and choose Boxes.

While you have the question selected that you want to edit,
click the “Drop-down” checkbox.

To make a question a required question so that the user cannot advance through
the survey or submit the survey without answering that particular question or
questions, right-click on the question, and choose Variable Properties.

In the Variable Properties window, select from the Must Answer dropdown, and choose Yes.
Then click [OK].

Snap Surveys allows you to reference a response from a previous question to be used in a subsequent question.
For example:
- Your first question would be “What did you order?”
- Your respondent would choose from a list of items.
- The next question would then ask “How much did you spend on [items selected in question 1]?”
To do this, you first need to do is set up your two
questions. (Notice that we typed up the
questions as normal, leaving a space where we want the responses from question
1 to be put in.)

The next thing to do is find out what the variable name for
Question 1 is. Do this by right-clicking
on Question 1 and choose Variable
Properties.

At the top of the Variable Properties window, you will then
see a field called Name. Write down what the value of that field is.

Click [OK] to close this window. Now, go back to Question 2, and right-click
where you left the space for Question 1 responses to go.

Choose Insert >> Variable Field…

Now type in the variable name you wrote down from Question
1. Click [OK].
Now, when a respondent answers Question 1, those responses will now feed into
Question 2.

There are times in a survey when you want to ask a question only if the respondent answers a particular way on a previous question. In the example below, you’ll notice that we only want to ask Question 8 if the respondent chooses “No” to Question 7.

You can set this up by telling Snap to only ask Question 8 if the answer to Question 7 is “No”. To do this, you need to first find out the variable name for Question 7 and the response value entered by the respondent.

Right-click on
Question 8, and choose Routing Rules.

Click [Add].

For Type, choose “Conditionally Ask Question”. Click [OK].

In the If field, type in the condition [Variable Name]=[Response Value]. Then click [OK].

Question 8 will now only be answered if the respondent chooses “No” as the answer for Question 7.
Snap allows you to display your questions in groups and separate these groups using Page Breaks. To insert a page break, select the question you want to appear on the next page (after the page break), and from the Style Variables dropdown, choose Break.

Check the box labeled “Page Break”. This will put a page break above the selected question.
You can choose from several preset styles created by Snap
Surveys by clicking on the Editions and Style Templates button
. In the Style Templates section,
click [Load], then choose the style
you wish to use.
You can change the Survey Type by double-clicking on the
survey tab at the bottom of your survey window.

In the Define Edition window, choose the Publication Medium
you wish to use. (For Snap Online
surveys, you must choose Publication Medium: Web, then Snap Online.)

To change the Page Background, go to File >> Page Setup. Under Section, choose Page. In the Page Style section, click on Colour or Picture to change those background elements.

To choose your output option, go to File >> Page setup. Under Section, choose Output. You have the following options:
· Preview Only – Saves the survey and opens in a browser.
· Publish with preview – Saves the survey, packages the survey in an uploadable format, and opens the preview in browser.
·
Publish
without preview – Saves the survey and packages it in an uploadable format.

When a respondent enters completes your survey, Snap gives you two options on how to store the responses:
1.
Email
replies – Responses are emailed to you as text to an account you specify.
This text information can then be imported into Snap.
2. Write to file – Responses are saved in one file that can then be downloaded and imported into Snap.
To specify how you want your responses stored, go to File >> Page Options, and under Section, choose Output. (Also notice that on this screen, you can specify what webpage to send the respondent to after submission.)

To publish (package) your survey, go to File >> Publish. Under
Section, choose Output. Choose whether you
want to Publish with Preview or Publish without Preview. Click [Publish].

This will package your survey into a compressed file that
includes all settings, images, and supplemental files. This packaged file is then used to upload
into Snap Online.
