l. Douglas Kiel

Profile

L. Douglas Kiel is Professor of Public Administration at the University of Texas at Dallas. He also holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and is a core faculty member of the Leadership Center at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Professor Kiel’s research interests include general public management, the management of change, productivity improvement and the relevance of neuroscience to management and decision-making. He is a leading authority in the application of the complexity sciences to management and organizations. He is also an authority on the application of agent-based models to examine organizational and social processes.

Dr. Kiel’s more than 50 published works are cited in more than 80 different academic journals ranging across the fields of public administration, business management, health care management and the law. Academic journals from fields as diverse as economics, geography, psychology, music and nuclear science also cite Kiel’s works.

Dr. Kiel gave the keynote address at the Society for Chaos Theory, Psychology and the Life Sciences in Denver, CO in August 2005.

Awards

Kiel’s 1994 book - Managing Chaos and Complexity in Government: A New Paradigm for Managing Change, Innovation and Organizational Renewal. (Jossey-Bass: San Francisco), received the 1994-1995 "Best Book Award" from the Public and Nonprofit Sector Division of the Academy of Management.
