Dr. Susan Williams McElroy is Associate Professor of Economics and Education Policy at the University of Texas at Dallas, School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences. Dr. McElroy received her Ph.D. in Economics of Education from Stanford University in 1996. She also holds Master’s degrees in Economics and Latin American Studies from Stanford University. She received her bachelor’s degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Dr. McElroy teaches courses in economics and education policy. As a researcher, she is primarily interested in economic inequality and in particular, the role of education in economic status. In that context, she has conducted research on and written about the economic and social consequences of teenage pregnancy and childbearing, economics of education, and poverty and economic inequality. Her papers have appeared in such journals as Economics of Education Review, Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Chicago Policy Review, and Journal of Public Management and Social Policy. In addition, Dr. McElroy co-wrote two chapters of Kids Having Kids: Economic Costs and Social Consequences of Teenage Pregnancy, an edited volume of research papers published in 1997 which was the culmination of a national study on teenage pregnancy. She has presented her research at numerous conferences of professional associations including the American Economic Association (AEA), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (AAPAM). Dr. McElroy’s previous faculty position was Assistant Professor of Economics and Education Policy at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She held an endowed chair at Carnegie Mellon University, the Dean’s Career Development Chair in Economics and Education, for four years. From 1999 to 2002, she served on the Board of Directors of the National Economic Association. In addition, she previously served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Housing Opportunities, Inc., a housing counseling and finance agency based in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and as a Director of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Western Pennsylvania.
