Professors receive major award to study British public opinion in run-up to next general election
Harold D. Clarke, Ashbel Smith Professor at UTD, together with Marianne C. Stewart, Professor at UTD, and two colleagues in the United Kingdom have just received a new award of £100,000 ($200,000 US) for a three-year study from the Economic and Social Research Council (U.K.).
This award extends a four-wave survey of the attitudes of thousands of Britons, using internet technology, in the aftermath of 9/11 and “7/7,” the terrorist attack in the London Underground.
Professor Clarke notes that “the award will allow us to advance what we have learned from the 2001 and 2005 British Election Studies and to understand much more about the shifting currents of British public opinion towards Tony Blair and other leaders involved in the post-9/11 issue agenda of crime, security, and terrorism. This could lead to a potentially fundamental change in British politics in the run-up to the next election.”
