UT Dallas Pre-Law Program Moves to National Prominence
UT Dallas Pre-Law Program has had its strongest year of program success since its founding nearly 30 years ago. Today, 150 students have a declared interest in Pre-Law. Within the past year, the Program has helped the largest number of seniors ever to apply to law school and nearly four dozen qualified students to win admission to the top law schools in the country. Many of these students are on their way to the very top at law schools such as Harvard, New York University, the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, the University of Virginia, the University of California-Berkeley, Northwestern, the University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Texas-Austin.
Other Pre-Law students have gone on to the law review of NYU, the chief editorship of Ohio State University Law Journal, and internships with the Administrative Assistant to Chief Justice John Roberts of the US Supreme Court and with the Office of the Honorable Richard Cheney, Vice President of the United States.
The Pre-Law Program at UTD is a full-service advising and resource center that helps students to make informed decisions about academic and personal preparation for law school and legal careers. According to Dr. Champagne, the Pre-Law Director, "we are really moving to provide opportunities that benefit pre-law students from across the University, including Moot Court, which sent two teams to the National Moot Court Tournament, Mock Trial, and Mediation which placed one of its teams third in the country in the National Mediation Tournament."
The Pre-Law Program works closely with the Political Science Program faculty at UTD. Dr. Champagne, a Professor of Political Science, is a three-time winner of the UT Chancellor's Outstanding Teaching Award. In addition to Dr. Champagne, Dr. Pamela Brandwein, also a winner of the Chancellor's Outstanding Teaching Award, and Dr. Linda Keith offer courses in civil liberties, constitutional development, constitutional law, comparative law, and judicial process that are much needed by pre-law students and will be featured in the newly proposed Master in Legal Studies degree program.
