Sociology, at a basic level, is the scientific study of society and social behavior. Sociologists are interested in a wide range of topics from interactions within and across family units, social classes and workplaces to the examination of education and healthcare systems, social change and religious institutions.

The sociology program at UTD offers students the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree in Applied Sociology. UTD also has an active undergraduate student sociology club and honors society.

A degree in sociology provides individuals with a broad scope of knowledge and skills which can be applied to many fields. Graduates are often employed in areas such as social services, teaching, management support in profit and non-profit organizations, sales and marketing, social science and marketing research, human resources, public relations and healthcare administration. A number of sociology graduates also pursue professional and graduate degrees in law, social work, counseling, public administration, public policy and criminal justice.

Salaries for sociologists with a Bachelor of Arts degree range from approximately $30,000 to $55,000 depending on industry/sector, years of experience and geographic location. For more information on career opportunities visit the American Sociological Association website.
