Why UTD?

The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) is one of the few universities anywhere to have been built from the top down, beginning as a research institute (1961), which was incorporated into the University of Texas System in 1969 as a graduate institution. In 1975, juniors and seniors were added, and not until 1990 were freshmen and sophomores enrolled. UTD serves the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroprex and attracts students from throughout Texas as well as Louisiana, California, Oklahoma, Illinois and New York.

The campus is located on 500 acres in suburban Richardson, Texas, just 16 miles north of downtown Dallas. The campus also is within close proximity to the second-largest concentration of high-tech companies in the nation (about 800 such companies are within a five-mile radius). The university actively maintains a synergy with its locale and has developed partnerships with high-tech companies – and many others – to provide employment opportunities and co-op programs for UTD students.

Naturally, a university as dynamic as UTD has a progressive mission: The university is committed to:

  1. producing engaged graduates, prepared for life, work and leadership in a constantly changing world.
  2. advancing excellent educational and research programs in the natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, management, and the liberal, creative, and practical arts.
  3. transforming ideas into actions that directly benefit the personal, economic, social, and cultural lives of the citizens of Texas.

UTD is a selective institution with some impressive enrollment statistics, starting with its 51 percent acceptance rate. More than 40 percent of incoming freshmen are in the top 10 percent of their high school class and 74 percent are in the top quarter. The top undergraduate majors are biology, business administration, computer science, and electrical engineering. The top graduate majors include accounting, communication disorders, computer science, electrical engineering, and management and administrative science.

UTD is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and encourages application from candidates who would enhance the diversity of the university’s faculty and administration.
