Comets Break for Spring
With spring break just around the corner, now is a great time to open up communication with your student about their plans during their time off.
Spring break activities for college students typically range from beach excursions to volunteer work. Regardless of their destination, parental advice and safe travel tips can go a long way to ensure that UT Dallas students make good decisions while navigating any spring break experience.
If your student plans to travel, make sure they are familiar with their destination, including travel routes, weather patterns and laws, especially if they are traveling internationally.
If they plan to spend their time working and studying, a care package may be a great way to send them a little extra motivation. And though it may be an uncomfortable conversation, it is always a good idea to talk to your student about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Make sure they are aware of the UT Dallas code of conduct, expectations and state law regarding these substances. Also make sure your student gives you a detailed itinerary of their plans, especially if travel is involved. This is a safeguard that can come in handy in case of an emergency.
If your student is having a difficult time finding something to do over the break, encourage them to maintain some type of schedule. Whether it is going to the gym, reading or meeting friends for lunch, having a schedule will help them stay motivated and productive over spring break.
The campus Activity Center will be open throughout the break and offers a place for students to get in some exercise or go for a swim if they remain in the area.
Alternative Spring Break
The Career Center hosts an opportunity for students to participate in externships and job shadowing. The externship program is a great way to explore potential career opportunities. The deadline to apply for participation is Jan. 31.
Although all trips are full, Alternative Spring Break, sponsored by our Office of Student Volunteerism, is a popular choice and offers students a chance to get away, hang out with their peers and give back to the community. It is something to consider for next year if your student did not secure their place for spring 2012.
