College Life: Adjusting to Change
Students leaving home for the first time may feel anxiety, isolation and loneliness as they adjust to a new environment. Resist the urge to jump in your car and bring your new college student home. The feelings he or she is having are a healthy part of maturing. As students learn to adjust to new situations, they widen their span of comfortable experiences, building independence and self-esteem in the process.
Help your student work through feelings of homesickness with these tips:
- Don’t dismiss their feelings; listen and encourage adjustment to the new environment.
- Help replace what’s missed the most. If it’s a pet, for instance, recommend volunteering at a local animal shelter.
- Encourage your student to join an organization and create a healthy and balanced daily routine.
- If you feel it’s needed, refer your student to the University’s Student Counseling Center to talk with someone confidentially.
