Chapter 35: Survivors and Dependents Assistance

The Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition or eligible dependents of veterans who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition. This program typically offers up to 45 months of educational benefits.

New Students – 1st Semester Using Benefits at UT Dallas

Step One – Complete one of the following via VONAPP:

  • VA Form 22-5490 – Dependents applying for the first time for the benefit
  • VA Form 22-5495 – Dependents who are transferring their benefit from another institution

Step Two – Submit the necessary documentation to UT Dallas:

  • VA Certificate of Eligibility
  • Official Academic Degree Plan, signed by your academic advisor (current class enrollment must be included on the degree plan)
  • UT Dallas Veterans Fact Sheet

Step Three – Check your UT Dallas email address:

  • Once certified, a notification will be sent ONLY to your UT Dallas email address with your certification information.

Renewal Certification (Continuing Students) – Required EACH semester

  • Register for your classes.
  • Turn in an online certification form; instructions can be found here.

Step Two – Check your UT Dallas email address:

  • Once certified, a notification will be sent ONLY to your UT Dallas email address with your certification information.
