UT Dallas Geological Summer Field Camp - Geosciences 4606
The geological summer field camp conducted by The University of Texas at Dallas follows the spectacular scenery of Northern New Mexico in the vicinity of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Taos Trough basin fill. The principal activity is problem-oriented mapping and interpretation of outcrops in several different geological settings (see the itinerary below).
The first project focus will be on evaluating the hydrogeology in the vicinity of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The second project will be mapping structural relationships of Precambrian to Paleozoic strata of the Taos Trough. The third project will focus on interpreting stratigraphy and sedimentary environments in superb cliff sections within mixed, siliclastic-carbonate deposits of Pennsylvanian-age. The fourth project will study the volcanic stratigraphy associated with a major explosive volcanic center in the Jemez Mountains. The final mapping project will be in amphibolite grade Precambrian metamorphic rocks of the Picuris Mountains. The emphasis will be on structural analysis of complexly deformed metasediment, although a well-preserved stratigraphy is apparent.
The field camp will cover the full gamut of geological rock-types, sedimentary environments and structural styles and environmental geology. It will be an outstanding opportunity to gain familiarity with a wide variety of fundamental interpretation techniques within a focused one month period.
In the past three years, we have run our camp in conjunction with staff at the University of Texas at Arlington.
Prerequisites
Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Hand Specimen Mineralogy and Petrology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology are required. A basic knowledge of section measuring, of topographic map reading, and the use of a Brunton Compass is advisable. (UT Dallas students will have an introductory Field Methods course.)
Fees
Approximately $1,400, which includes room, board, and transportation to and from Dallas. Out-of-state students should inquire about aid to defer the additional out-of-state tuition.
