Announcements and Updates
We are pleased to announce the implementation of a new electronic insurance waiver request system for international students who wish to request a waiver of the UT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Beginning with the summer, 2014 term waiver applications will be accepted only through the new electronic system. You may submit your summer, 2014 waiver application starting on April 15, 2014. International students enrolled for the summer, 2014 term will receive an email with instructions and login information. Please note that the UT System is in the process of changing the health insurance requirements for international students. While the official policy statement is not yet available, the changes will include a requirement that insurance coverage for international students beginning fall, 2014, be fully compliant with the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). To ensure that we remain compliant with this federal law, international students will be required to submit a waiver request each and every semester of enrollment if they wish to be waived from the UT Student Health Insurance Plan based on enrollment in an alternate plan.
Beginning fall, 2014 students who have purchased the UT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) will no longer be required to make payment at the time they receive services. The Student Health Center will start filing insurance claims directly with Blue Cross Blue Shield on behalf of students who are covered by the plan. Services received at the UT Dallas Student Health Center are 100% covered by the UT SHIP. Students who have chosen NOT to purchase the UT SHIP will continue to be required to make payment at the time they receive services.
Enrollment in The UT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is required of all international students holding non-immigrant visas and is made available to domestic studentswho wish to purchase the insurance coverage.
International students are automatically enrolled in the UT SHIP, and a charge for the insurance premium is placed on their tuition and fee bill. International students who are already covered by a comparable insurance plan that meets or exceeds the UT System requirements may request a waiver from the UT SHIP. The waiver application will be reviewed and students will be notified as to whether or not their current insurance plan meets the requirements. If approved, the cost of the UT SHIP will be refunded.
