Six Thinking Hats

Description: Unless you took a philosophy or “critical thinking” classes in high school or college, you probably have had no formal instruction on thinking. But make no mistake, we have learned to think, particularly in our Western culture, largely as the result and influence of three Greek thinkers by the names of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. In this class, we will explore just how their influence has influenced our approach to thinking. We will explore a different way or approach to thinking pioneered by Dr. Edward De Bono. This approach has been referred to as "parallel thinking" and is also known under the title of the "Six Thinking Hats" method.

Using the metaphor of putting on our thinking caps, Dr. De Bono suggests there are six approaches, or perhaps more properly, six directions in thinking. He asserts that if we can learn to use all six of the thinking hats, our thinking will be richer and perhaps even faster in reaching decisions and taking action. To that end, a class is being offered to all UTD faculty and staff on March 24, beginning at 1:30 PM in the UTDesign Studio Seminar Room at Synergy Park North). The class will be informative and fun. And, who knows you may come out of it not with just one thinking cap but six.
