Professional Nurse Practioner

Summary:

Function & Scope:

To provide primary health care services in a clinical setting under the supervision  and direction of a primary care physician in one of the following areas; geriatrics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology (including family planning) of adult or adolescent health.  Responsible for the performance of tasks of a standardized nature which are complex and require considerable experience of specialized training, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.

 

 

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

      • Obtains complete medical historical data from patients. Performs physical examinations, using techniques of observation, auscultation, palpation, and percussion.
      • Will perform routine gynecological exams.
      • Discriminates in examinations between normal and abnormal evaluations and refers to a physician for review and/or re-examination.
      • Provides follow-up and maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocol established by the physician in charge.
      • Instructs and counsels patients with respect to such subjects as physical activity, diets, medications, family planning, hygiene, etc.
      • Executes such diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as the physician may assign.
      • Plans and implements, under the direction of the physician a regime of care for heath maintenance and chronic health problems in accordance with established protocols, and monitors and evaluates patient progress.

Marginal Functions:

      • Performs other duties as assigned. 
      • Gathers statistical data on patient problems, patient compliance with regimen, and patient follow-up.

Receives general direction from consulting physicians.

Given: May provide work direction to students.

Education:

Required:

Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in nursing, including prescribed course of study in health assessment and clinical supervision. Current registration with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners and approval to practice as an advanced nurse practitioner.

Required:

One year of primary health care experience as nurse clinician or practitioner.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be proficient in the use of all instruments and equipment required for the work.

 

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

Extreme accuracy in all phases of work.  Ambulatory care clinic.

Other:

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
