Licensed Vocational Nurse

Summary:

Function & Scope: To provide advanced paraprofessional patient care and nursing service to the physically ill in accordance with education and experience. Responsible for the safety, comfort, treatment and care of patients requiring the specialization of a skilled paraprofessional nurse.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists professional nurses and/or physicians in conducting examinations.
  • Administers prescribed medications and injections.
  • Provides treatments, observes patients' reactions to treatment and medication.
  • Discusses patients' condition with nursing superiors.
  • Draws blood and takes vital signs.
  • Records necessary information for review by professional nurses or physicians.
  • Oversees the administration of patient care and nursing services of the unit.
  • Determines work priorities of subordinate staff.
  • May assist with clinical research or perform other specialized duties requiring supplemental training.

Marginal Functions:

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision:

Received:Direct supervision from professional nursing staff with occasional general instruction from physicians.

Given: General and direct supervision to subordinate non-professional personnel.

Education:

Required: Graduation from an approved vocational nursing school and a current Texas license.

Preferred: N/A

Experience:

Required: Five years of vocational nursing experience.

Preferred: N/A

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
