Summary:
Function & Scope: To coordinate an advising unit within a university college, including oversight of advising, and support staff, program implementation, publicity, data collection, reports, and accountability for meeting program objectives; or to manage more complex academic advising activities.
Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Advise students (undergraduate & post-baccalaureate) about the development of educational plan options and resources available.
- Work closely with other advisors, faculty, and staff to provide timely information on course/degree options and University policies.
- Make appropriate referrals.
- Instruct freshman year experience courses.
- Plan, develop, and implement programs for students within the school.
- Audit degree plans; evaluate transcript or student records.
- Explore new models for effective delivery of advising.
- Coordinate advising efforts within the school and with other units.
- Perform related duties as required, including recruitment.
Marginal Functions:
Attend appropriate professional development conferences.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision:
Received: Functions independently, with general instruction from dean, college master, and director of undergraduate advising.
Given: May train, coordinate, and provide collaborative leadership to advising and support staff within the college.
Education:
Required: Doctorate degree in counseling or a related field and two years of experience working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity; or Master’s degree and five years experience as described above.
Preferred: Doctorate degree.
Experience:
Required: Minimum of two years of experience working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity. Directly related academic advising and reaching experience in college or university setting.
Preferred: Five years of experience working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity. Directly related academic advising and teaching experience in college or university setting.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency with computers and applicable software programs.
Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):
Working Conditions – General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with staff and administrators both during and after office hours. Occasional evenings and weekends required.
Other:
If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.
Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
