Summary:

Function & Scope: To develop an academic advising program or unit to create or promote new initiatives an academic advising. To serve as liaison to faculty members for exchange of academic information. Responsible for understanding and interpreting the needs of specific populations of students to administrators; for interpreting, formulating and evaluating institutional rules for students; and for facilitating exchange of academic information

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Advise students, individually and in groups, about the development of educational plan options and resources available.
  • Work closely with other advisors, faculty and staff to provide timely information on course/degree options and University policies.
  • Make appropriate referrals.
  • Plans, develops, implements and teaches all policies and programs affecting a specific student population (for example: Potential for Academic Success Seminar) and facilitates campus wide coordination.
  • Audit degree plans.
  • Perform related duties as required including recruitment.  

Marginal Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in professional conferences and individual professional development.
  • Develops and oversees projects.
  • Assists with the recruitment and training of full-time and part-time staff.

Supervision:

Received: General, from designated supervisor.

Given: May manage, train or coordinate Academic Advisor I employees and student workers.

Education:

Required: Doctorate degree in counseling or related field and no experience; or Master’s degree and three years experience working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity; or Bachelor’s degree and five years experience as described above.

Preferred: Graduate degree and directly related academic advising and teaching experience in college or university setting. Doctorate degree in counseling or related field and no experience

Experience:

Required: Three years working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity.

Preferred: Five years working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity.

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students, staff and administrators both during and after. usual office hours.

Other:

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
