Assistant Athletic Trainer

Summary:
Function & Scope: To evaluate physical condition and provide skilled treatment to student athletes to maintain maximum physical fitness for participation in athletic competition. Under general supervision, prescribes routine and corrective exercise to strengthen muscles; recommends special diets to increase/decrease weight. Treats chronic minor injuries and related disabilities to maintain student athlete performance. May have primary responsibility for a related program, such as strength and conditioning program. May design customized individual training programs.
Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Designs and implements basic fitness, nutrition, and strength and conditioning programs for student-athletes.
- May design customized plans to meet individual needs.
- Operates therapeutic devices and equipment.
- Fits braces, guards, mouth pieces, and other similar devices.
- Administers first aid to injured players such as giving artificial respiration, cleaning and bandaging wounds, and applying heat and cold to promote healing.
- Wraps ankles, fingers, or wrists in synthetic skin, protective gauze, and adhesive tape to support muscles and ligaments.
- Oversees the daily management of training room, including ordering and storage of supplies and equipment.
- Calls physician for seriously injured athletes.
- Supervises safety factors of athletic competition by ensuring elimination of undue hazards.
- May assist injured athletes in completing and submitting insurance claims.
- May lead, guide, and train staff/student employee, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work.
- May participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
- Assures compliance with applicable regulations, effective operations, and accuracy of data and security of assets.
Marginal Functions:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision:
Received: General directions from Athletic Trainer, Athletic Director, consulting physicians.
Given: General and specific to student assistants.
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine or related athletic training degree program. Texas State Athletic Trainer License. CPR license.
Preferred Master’s degree in Sports Medicine or related athletic training degree program and NATA certification.
Experience:
Required: Two to five years high school or University athletic training experience.
Preferred: More than five years prior related University-level experience.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Equipment – Personal computer, whirlpool, muscle stimulator.
Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):
Accuracy – Proficiency in all phases of duties performed.
Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Other:
If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.
Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
